August 12 – Mt. Desert Ice Cream (ONP #224)
Wow, I had to overcome serious resistance to go out and see today’s New Place.
I spent most of the morning and a good part of the early afternoon out with friends at non-new places, so when I came home, and then the rain started in the late afternoon (busting my plans to go to a new park), I really had nothing up my sleeve—no ideas, no desire.
But as evening came, and as I also was hungry (and had no desire to go grocery shopping either), I thought maybe I could kill two birds with one stone. Like a vision, the memory of Mt. Desert Ice Cream, which I had read about in the Washington Post, came to me, and I was suddenly inspired: Ice Cream for Dinner!
Not just any ice cream either—ice cream with its origins in Maine (my old stomping grounds). Mt. Desert Ice Cream is conveniently located in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood, just a short bus ride up the street from me. I was there in no time, and after sampling several of the intriguing flavors (Cardamom Crumble?), a delightful concoction of
sweet cream ice cream with fudge and toffee and pretzel bits was mine, all mine, for supper. It was seriously some of the best ice cream I have ever eaten.
I sat at the ledge in the window watching the last of the rain dribble down feeling very pleased with myself. Yes, Ice Cream in the rain for supper on a Sunday night, and another New Place in the bag!
