July 8 – Grant Circle Park (ONP #189)

It’s funny: Even though I live in a big city, so much of my time is spent in the same neighborhoods–where I work, where I live, where I go for my healthcare and hospital. It can seem a bit like an exotic trip to go into another neighborhood. I get kind of excited about it!

So today, when I had an invitation to the Petworth neighborhood (one I am somewhat familiar with although certainly not like a native Petworthonian), I scoured the map beforehand looking for a new place to check out.One green spot stood out: Grant Circle Park.

Set plumb smack in the middle of Grant Circle(a veritable octopus of a traffic circle, with eight roads emanating from it in various directions),Grant Park looks for all the world, on a map, like a big green pie–and it kind of is! It is evenly dissected into six pieces with walkways leading to an adorable shaggy tree in the center.

One “slice” of the pie is also home to a butterfly garden planted with yellow and purple flowers–evidence that somebody cares about this place on earth. Me too.
